Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are now into the second quarter of the school year. Time flies when you are having fun! I have a few items for you:
Quarter One Report Cards were sent home with students last Friday. This was our first marking period with our new grading program, Empower. Our goal with report cards, and with our grading program overall, is to clearly communicate to you how your child is doing with their learning. This report card, however, is designed to be a mere snapshot of where students are at that point in time. We encourage all parents to go online and view grades within the Empower Program. By clicking on the “Goal Browser” in the top right corner of the screen, you can get an up to date view of where your child is in their learning and where they are going next. Please provide us with feedback of how this is going for you. This is a new system for our school and we are all learning together. We rely on parent feedback to help us improve our systems of communication.
Honor Roll. We are excited to announce our Quarter One Honor Roll. Click HERE. This list will also be published on our website and in local newspapers in the coming days. As a reminder, to qualify for the “Honor Roll” at the end of each quarter, students must have 95% of their Work Habits scores as 3’s & 4’s, with no 1’s. HERE is a more detailed description of our school’s student recognition protocol. Congratulations to all our students who received this recognition!
Sports and Club Participation. MAMS has so many clubs, activities, and sports for our students to participate in. There is something for everyone! We held a school-wide assembly this week to promote student involvement in extracurricular activities. Please speak with your child about participation in clubs and activities and reach out to their Advisor for assistance in helping them join any of these activities:
track and field
cheering club (tbd)
nordic ski club
drama (Annie and Seussical)
art & pottery wheel club
rubik's cube club
‘change the world’ club
magic the gathering club
Student Email Usage. Upon our return from the Thanksgiving Holiday we will be turning on email accounts for Middle School students so that students can use email to communicate with their teachers and vice versa. For the time being, these accounts will only be able to make contact with accounts within our district - this means that they will be unable to email you, and you will be unable to email them. We are hoping to turn on external email for our 7th and 8th grade students at a later date. We have incorporated security tools to help keep students safe. A piece of software will scan emails for certain words and phrases, and alert the technology and learning commons teams of any inappropriate use of the system. As we move closer to allowing external emails for 7th and 8th grade, we will be certain to keep you up to date. Please contact the Learning Commons team with any questions or concerns.
Maine Youth Leader Day. The following Middle School students were selected to attend Maine Youth Leadership Day on October 28th, 2016 at The Hyde School in Bath. The theme of the conference was overcoming obstacles and embracing our challenges. US Senator Angus King was the keynote address followed by workshop rotations facilitated by Maine business owners, coaches, teachers, entrepreneurs, and other schools. Students explored the importance and challenges of sound moral character and the practice of leadership, and developing their own sense of personal leadership.
District III Band. The following students were selected to participate in the District III Honors Band festival. We are excited to announce that this year’s state-wide festival will be held at Mt. Ararat Middle School on April 7-8, 2017. A pat on the back to all our amazing musicians for trying out and a special congratulations to these selected students:
Leigh Ann Patton
Science Achievement. Last week, the State of Maine released their data for how our students performed on the Maine Education Science Assessment, taken last Spring. We are pleased to announce that 71% of Mt. Ararat Middle School students met or exceeded proficiency on this comprehensive exam, which is more than 10 percentage points above the state average! The state will be releasing the Math and Reading scores in the coming weeks, and I will follow up with more communication at that time.
If any questions, comments, or suggestions arise, please feel free to call the school at 729-2950 or send me an email at: email@example.com.
