Protocol for Work Habits

RATIONALE

  • There is a direct and positive correlation between work habits and academic performance on learning goals

  • Work habits are separate from learning goals and are reported separately

  • When students are Focused, Respectful, and Responsible, these “Work Habits” are correlated to successful academic performance

  • Feedback guides parents and students to improve or celebrate work habits

  • Behaviors impact learning

  • Clear expectations support engagement and learning from mistakes

PROTOCOL

  • In each subject area, there will be three Graduation Standard categories called: “Work Habit: Focused” , “Work Habit: Respectful”, and “Work Habit: Responsible”

  • Within each of those categories, there will be one learning goal per work habit per grade for each work habit

    • Ex.  “Math → Work Habit: Focused →  6th grade” would be a tile

  • Teachers are responsible for reporting on each of the 3 work habits 8 times per year (at progress reports halfway through the quarter and at end of quarter )

    • The score entered at the end of the quarter will overwrite the one entered at progress reports.  However, a historical record of these changes is kept.

  • Teachers are encouraged to engage with students in developing success criteria for each of the work habits and in reflecting on their progress

WORK HABITS SCALES

Recognition will be based on Work Habit scores.  Work habits have been shown to be positively correlated to achievement on academic learning goals and support our school’s mission of developing a growth mindset.  In order to make the Honor Roll, students need to have 95% or more of their work habits scores be at the “Meets” (3) or “Exceeds” (4) level from the previous quarter.  We will release our Honor Roll four times a year at the end of each quarter.
